It’s the most wonderful time of year. Winter break? Not so fast, Dukes. Before that, we get to experience the lovely week of finals. That is right, folks. As if you have not lost enough sleep and sanity throughout the semester, you now get to lose it all in one week. The finish line seems to close, yet so far. It is the biggest struggle knowing that you have holiday break right around the corner but have to get through endless exams, essays, and projects to do so. At this point, all it takes is not finding a parking spot in Champions and a crying meltdown is among us. But when this time of year hits us, all it takes are deep breaths and the ideal study spot to hide out in to give us the relief we have been looking for. When people think of the best study spot, Carrier and ECL may be the first thing on their minds, but why bother when looking for a table becomes the equivalent of being thrust into The Hunger Games? If you want to become enlightened of all the studying hotspots that the ‘Burg has to offer, read on. Not only will your mind feel satisfied, but your appetite as well. Gather your notes and take a seat in one of these places and you will have a better outlook on finals in the future.
1. Greenberry’s
Change is always good, so why not change up your finals preparation and go to Greenberry’s? Going here will take you out of your coffee and study routine, but for the better. The drink menu has enough coffees and teas to satisfy your caffeine fix and their freshly created sandwiches and pastries will never make you crave another Starbucks item again. Its location has its perks too. Right between Memorial and Grace Street Apartments, this place is great if you want to escape studying on campus in between classes but do not want to travel far to do so.

2. Earth and Tea Cafe
At this café, you will find your Zen the minute you walk in the door. You are instantly met with a Bohemian vibe from the beautiful and colorful textiles that decorate the room. Enter the café with a loud mind and leave with all your stressful finals thoughts silenced. Order a tea and get lost in the books. This spot will put your mind at ease as opposed to the hectic situation that is Carrier and ECL.
3. Cinnamon Bear Bakery
This place is within walking distance from E-Hall and while you may not want to make the trek carrying a load of books, it is worth it given the menu. Breakfast items are served all day, giving you any time of the day to indulge in their breakfast burritos, wraps, and bagels. If you find that your workload is a little heavier than expected, stay for lunch. They serve traditional options, such as the Italian sub and the Reuben, as well as more unique options like the Spicy Basil Chicken Wrap. They know how to take the standard coffee drink and turn it up a notch, creating items like the Snickers bar latte and the Elvis latte. This place has just the right amount of coziness to put you at ease at such an uneasy time as finals.

4. Black Sheep Coffee
Not all Dukes know about this place as it is hidden inside the Ice House on South Liberty. Take advantage of this and spend your time studying here. It can be your little sanctuary for gathering notes and creating endless Quizlet sets. Hanging on the wall of Black Sheep is a sign that reads “Work Hard and Be Nice to People.” You will find it easy to do just that with its secluded nature and friendly staff. It is hard not to be happy here when your heart is being warmed by a mocha latte and maple oat scone.
5. Artful Dodger
Artful truly never misses a beat as being the perfect spot for any occasion. Whether you are going to brunch with your family, grabbing a few drinks with your friends, or getting a little studying in, it’s chill, eclectic environment always creates the ideal vibe. The outdoor seating provides the opportunity to kick back and relax and take in the downtown culture of Harrisonburg while also taking in your academics. Step inside of Artful and you will feel equally relaxed and inspired by the creativity expressed on the wall space in the various works of art displayed. Top all of this off with great food for great prices, and you will never want to leave, even once finals are over.
